Duct Sealing As An Energy Conservation Measure (ECM)
Webinar Summary
This webinar was a live broadcast on September 7, 2017. Live attendees were eligible for continuing education credits.
Ducts leak… It’s not a secret, but it is a problem…a significant one! ASHRAE estimates that 75% of commercial buildings have 10-25% duct leakage. A recent survey confirms it:
- 75% of respondents believe leaky ducts contribute substantially to energy loss in commercial buildings
- 73% believe most U.S. buildings today have significant duct leakage
- 46% have found significant duct leakage most prevalent in existing buildings
The cost in lost energy from these duct leaks is HUGE. A commissioning study from Berkeley National Labs shows duct leakage to be the TOP building fault when it comes to energy waste. In fact, annual energy cost from duct leakage is estimated to be a whopping $2.9 billion. Nearly double its closest “rival” – leaving the HVAC on when building is unoccupied.
Webinar Objectives
In this webinar, panelists will give an overview of the problem, and introduce attendees to specific tools to estimate duct leakage and methods used to ensure a building is a good candidate for duct sealing. Real-life project results will verify the efficacy of the duct leakage estimating tools. Learning objectives include:
- Learn to understand the potential energy loss attributable to duct leakage in commercial buildings
- Learn how to calculate and quantify energy loss due to duct leakage
- Learn to document and present the elimination of duct leakage as an energy conservation measure (ECM)
- Learn about the remedies for duct leakage and how they are implemented
